This year (2019) I was able to participate in an event called PDX Squared. This is an American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) Oregon chapter event and is open to professional and amateur photographers.
Here is the concept:
100 PARTICIPANTS ARE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED A SQUARE SECTION OF PORTLAND AND HAVE 24 HOURS TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR AREA. LIVE JUDGING TAKES PLACE AT THE END OF THE 24 HOUR TIME FRAME, AND PRIZES ARE AWARDED.
The categories are:
- DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
- URBAN LANDSCAPE
- NATURAL WORLD
- SERIES OF 3 to 5
Overall, I had a lot of fun. You are forced to think on your feet, explore an area of town you may not be familiar with or try a shoot a subject or style you are not familiar with. In addition, you get to hangout with 100+ photographers from the local community and see what they captured (or created).
I’m looking forward to PDX Squared 2020. Here are the four images I submitted to the contest.
